Generally, the public sees Acne as an unpleasant right of passage for teens, but many are unaware that the skin condition burdens men and women of all ages for years past their teens. WebMD reports that Acne, is not the same Acne for each age group, and often varies from teens to adults. Amy Derick, MD, a member of the American Academy of Dermatology explains,”…teens’ skin tends to be a little stickier and they’re more likely than adults to get clogged pores,” which results in acne typically on the face, neck and back of teens. The article also states that for adults, acne is more commonly seen as smaller bumps and cysts around the chin, mouth, and jaw line.

WebMD reports from the University of Alabama-Birmingham of Acne Sufferers per Age group:

In their 20s, 50.9% of women and 42.5% of men in their 20s reported experiencing adult acne
In their 30s, 35.2% of women and 20.1% of men reported adult acne
In their 40s, 26.3% of women and 12% of men reported experiencing acne
Even in their 50s, 15.3% of women and 7.3% of men reported experiencing acne

Fernando Perez, a representative for Probiotic Action agrees with Derick’s response to over the counter treatments, “Most of the over-the-counter products involve salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, which are good for whiteheads and pustules, but not so much for deeper adult acne,” quoted Derick. Perez adds, ” the harsh chemicals that are used to treat acne often do more harm than good by cracking and drying the skin.”

Perez also states that, “finding the right treatment for your skins age and acne severity differs from one individual to the next, without education, one could use the wrong treatment for years.” See doctor Secrets!
